Experiencing God | God Talks to You

Psalm 46:10

"Be still and know that I am God."

Joshua 1

7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Psalm 40

 1 I waited patiently for the LORD;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the LORD
and put their trust in him.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.

Romans 8:29-30

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

Psalm 37:4

4 Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Matthew 7:7

7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

Romans 7:14-25

14 So the trouble is not with the law, for it is spiritual and good. The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. 15 I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. 16 But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. 17 So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.

18 And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. 19 I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. 20 But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.

21 I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. 22 I love God’s law with all my heart. 23 But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? 25 Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.

Psalm 8

1 LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory
in the heavens.
2 Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them? 5 You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.
6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
7 all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
8 the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas. 9 LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

1 Samuel 3

Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy. 9 So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10 The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!”

Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Jeremiah 1:7-8

7 But the LORD said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the LORD.

God Wants To Talk To You

Experience God by Hearing God Talk

Many researchers have found that experiencing something in mental imagery is psychologically and physiologically similar to experiencing that same thing in real life (Klinger, 1980; Kosslyn, 1980; Neisser, 1976; Zenon, 1981). Imagery and sensory perception share much of the same physiological machinery (Shepard, 1978; Finke 1980). In meditation you direct and are in control of your own thinking. This is not God. This is you thinking to yourself, purposefully causing images or thoughts to form in your mind. This is the beginning technique that is encouraged by most mystics, including St. John of the Cross (Kavanaugh and Rodriguez 1964). You will reach a point where you turn over your thinking to God. Then God creates the images and words for you. This is communication from God, and it moves you from the state of meditation to the state of contemplation.
St. John of the Cross is known for his deep spiritual experiences with God. He taught beginners to use imagination and fantasy in their quest to communicate with God. Later he taught them to keep an empty mind, opening the total being to God. With the use of meditation, the seeker will draw closer to God. Holy images and words will form (Kavanaugh and Rodriguez 1964).
To try contemplation, sit or lie down in a quiet place, pay attention to your breathing, relax and quieten your mind. Ask God what He has to say to you today. Then open yourself up in every way you know how, every sense, and receive the communication from God. There will come a time when God will take over your thinking. Human-directed meditation is left behind and now God directs the journey. This is contemplation. Don’t be afraid. God will not take you too fast. He will give you just enough spiritual experience to keep you coming back for more. The more you return, the more you learn about yourself and God. God has many things to teach you.
In meditation, you use your imagination to visualize something that will bring you closer to God. You can use something sensory that will focus your attention like music, flowing water, a flower, candle, or sunset.
As you become more proficient at meditation, there will come a point where you let your mind stay blank. Here, if you ask, God will take over your thinking. He will begin to encourage, support and educate you. Allow God to bring you along. Don’t be in a hurry. Everyone is different. No two people are the same. We all have a unique spiritual journey.
Take a pad of paper and a pen every morning and ask God what he has to say to you today. The words will come, a sentence, a paragraph, or a few pages. You will sense when the message is done. Save these messages and go back and read them from time to time. You will see that everything that God says comes true. It might not come true in the way you thought it would, but it comes true.

Do not continue on this spiritual journey alone. If you do, you are in for a world of trouble. You will get off track and be deceived by evil. You need someone to guide you. Through the years a person in this role has been called many things: spiritual guide, soul friend, spiritual companion, and spiritual director. The name is not important, but the relationship is vital. I have chosen the name spiritual friend after Tilden Edward's book, Spiritual Friend: Reclaiming the Gift of Spiritual Direction, 1980.

Experiencing God Through Meditation

"Don't you think I want them all to hear? If they listen, they will hear. If they hear, they will believe."

Experiencing God Through a Personal Experience

To believe you must have a personal experience with God. A part of God lives inside of you. You are not God, and never will be, but God will talk to you inside of your mind. As you read this, you feel a gentle nudge. That is the Spirit of God awakening. Once it matures it is going to change the world. God is your creator, friend and father. He wants to tell you his plan for your life.
Try to be open-minded. If you have doubts—good, that means you are being honest with yourself. God can handle your doubts. When God speaks to you, you will know it is God--there will be no doubt. Of course, after the experience, doubt will come back. That is the force of evil. Evil doesn’t want you to communicate with God because once you do you are going to change human history. Imagine the God who knows everything about the past and the future, who knows everything about everyone, the God who has all the power, the God who can do anything, imagine this God talking to you.
Aren't you excited to find out what God has to say?

Test the Communication

There are several ways to confirm that the communications come from God. This is called testing the spirits. Compare the communication with scripture. God will never disagree with himself, and he has spoken in the Bible. Check out the communication with other believers. Some have the gift of discernment. A prayer group or clergy person may be willing to help. If you need a direct test of the communication open the bible randomly and read where ever your eye hits on the page. Three things will be revealed at some point you as you read:
1. A feeling of peace.
2. The hurdle or hurdles between you and God.
3. The action you can take today to begin your new spiritual journey.

Discipline
Discipline yourself to communicate with God every day. Things are not going to get right in your life until you spend quality time with God. Get a pad of paper and a pen and put it beside your bed. Every morning ask God, "God, what do you have to say to me today." Put the pen to the paper. Words will come, and when they do, write them down. It might be a word or two, a sentence or two, or a page or two. You will know when the communication is done. It is your responsibility to carry out what God tells you to do that day. This is the way to be happy, joyous and free.

Discover the Purpose For Your Life
As you continue your communications with God a time will come when he will tell you the plan for your life. This plan will awaken the seed completely and you will be given great power to carry the plan out. This plan will seem so fantastic that you will know that you are incapable of doing it. Remember, if you use God's power, you can do anything. With God all things are possible. All you have to do is take one step at a time and God will make the plan come true.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11)

Find a Spiritual Friend
It is important to ask a spiritual friend to help you. If you don't do this, evil will fool you and you will get lost. This person must be someone who is further along on the spiritual journey. Pray for this person to come into your life. Find a place of worship where you feel accepted. Tell your spiritual friend everything that happens between you and God. Share the details of your journey.
If you genuinely tried the exercises suggested here, you have made your first conscious contact with God. Don't stop! There are many more ways to hear God's voice. You can improve your relationship with God. You have a long journey ahead of you. This new adventure with God will give you happiness beyond your wildest dreams. I'm sure you can't wait to get going and learn more about how to hear God's voice. He wants to answer your questions and welcome you home.
